Following on chronologically from our meeting in June on the Bronze Age, we will now discuss the Iron Age.
The Iron Age in Britain lasted roughly from 800 BCE to the Roman conquest beginning in 43 CE. During this period, Iron was more abundant than bronze and could be made into stronger implements, though producing it required specialized knowledge and furnaces. There are still no written historical records.
Suggested topics for discussion at our July meeting could be:
- Tribes such as the Iceni and Durotriges in the South-West.
- Forts such as Maiden Castle , Cadbury Castle and Ham Hill.
- Farming and food (wheat / cattle / sheep etc), everyday life.
- Iron tools, weapons and decorative metalwork
- Religion and beliefs
- Warfare
- Druids - history or myth?
Let me know if you would like to "do a talk" at the next meeting, please.
If you want to come along to our July meeting you would be made very welcome!
You just need to turn up if interested - there is no need to come prepared; only to enjoy yourself; learn a bit about our history and have a good natter about how the past has had an impact on today.
