Following on chronologically from our meeting in July on the Iron Age, we will now discuss the arrival of the Romans in Britain.

We will not want to talk about just the Romans but also about the indigenous people and how they lived, travelled ate etc. As we discussed at the last meeting, if someone wants to talk about an element of history that traverses a longer period that would be greatly appreciated - for example, we could track religion / transport / politics / agriculture / women over several meetings.

We are now set for our August meeting with three speakers:

1. Boudica (Queen of the Iceni)
   • Part 1 - her earlier life, gross abuse by Romans of Celtic tribes, sacking of Colchester, London and St Albans, etc.   - Dee
   • Part 2 - the Roman army, final battle etc.  - Darren
   • Dee and Darren will both comment on Boudica's iconic status, from Victorian times, as a national symbol.

2. The (amusing) Roman account of their first expedition to Britain - Andrea

If you want to come along to our meeting for the first time you would be made very welcome!

You just need to turn up if interested - there is no need to come prepared; only to enjoy yourself; learn a bit about our history and have a good natter about how the past has had an impact on today.
