Philosophy Group, topic for October meeting:
Exploring the meaning of ‘drugs’.

Drugs are often spoken about in headlines, policies, and moral debates, but rarely do we pause to ask the deeper questions behind the word itself. What is a drug? A source of healing, a tool for escape, a threat to society, or simply a substance that alters our experience of the world?
Philosophy gives us space to step back from the noise and examine the assumptions we carry. Why do we celebrate some mind‑altering substances and criminalise others? What does responsibility mean when pleasure, pain, addiction, and freedom intersect? And how should a society balance compassion, autonomy, and harm when making decisions about drug use?
